Report: McLaren Looks to Hybridize Over Half Its Lineup By 2022

ccording to an interview with McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt, the future of McLaren features a heavy emphasis on hybridization and efficiency. Flewitt, talking with Automotive News Europe, confirmed that the British supercar maker looks to have more than half of its lineup hybridized by 2022.

McLaren kicked off its hybrid powertrain tech with the mighty McLaren P1 hypercar from 2014, featuring its ubiquitous 3.8-liter V-8 engine paired with an electric motor. Now, as McLaren moves forward with its successful 570S and 570GT entry-level supercars, the automaker looks to invest a large chunk of a one billion dollar R&D expenditure on a “completely new powertrain architecture and new structures.” While Flewitt was coy on any official figures, he did delve into a brief overview what we can expect.

“It will be specifically designed for a hybridized application. In the latter part of this business plan to 2022, more than half our cars will be hybrids,” he told Automotive News Europe. “This second powertrain will run in parallel to the eight cylinder we have today and will have hybrid technology integrated into it from day one.”

Flewitt said that the new powertrain would require a slightly different carbon-fiber tub, and that the new powertrain would arrive, “about the end of the decade.” That comes as the automaker looks to increase sales from about 3,000 last year to 4,500-5,000 by 2022, he told ANE.

On the topic of plug-in hybrids, however, Flewitt isn’t convinced: “Plug-ins bring a lot of advantages, but a stand-alone hybrid is more convenient.”
